THE HISTORY OF THE PORSCHE 356 SPEEDSTER
On June 8, 1948, the first automobile bearing the Porsche name received its homologation: it was the Porsche 356/1 Roadster manufactured in Gmünd (Carinthia, Austria).
The “Gmünd Roadster” was powered by a 1.1-liter, air-cooled, flat-four Volkswagen engine. The power of this engine had been increased to 35 hp for the 356. Thus, the roadster, with a weight of only 585 kilograms, reached speeds of up to 135 km/h.
The first 356s (also called “Pre-A”) are easily identifiable by their split windshield with a central bar. This was replaced from the 1952 model year onwards by a single-piece windshield with a fold in the middle.
All generations of the 356 were also available in an “open” version (Cabriolet, Speedster, or Roadster).
