THE HISTORY OF THE TRIUMPH TR6

The TR6 was launched in 1969 and garnered much praise. Before it, the TR5 and TR250 had introduced six-cylinder engines to the TR lineup. The 2.5-liter engine of the TR6 was essentially the same as the TR250, as were the majority of mechanical components. However, the bodywork had been reworked by Karmann, the same company that designed the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia and manufactured the Beetle convertible.

The main aesthetic changes consisted of moving the headlights to the edge of each wing and creating a truncated “Kamm” style rear. The result was a new, intimidating look that attracted many buyers, especially in North America where 90% of the total production was shipped, including all models produced after 1974.

FEATURES OF THE TRIUMPH TR6

All TR6 models were equipped with a straight-six engine. For the American market, it was exclusively carbureted, like the Triumph TR250. For all other countries, including the UK, it featured direct fuel injection, like the TR5 PI. At the vehicle’s introduction, the mechanical Lucas fuel injection allowed the Triumph TR6 to have 150 hp. Later, the power of the Triumph TR6s not intended for the American market was reduced to 125 hp to make them easier to drive.

Our Triumph TR6 has a four-speed gearbox associated with an overdrive. This is a particularly interesting option since it provides a series of closely spaced gears for sporty driving, acting on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears, thus offering “long” gears for “unwinding” on fast roads. The Triumph TR6 features independent rear wheel suspension with two trailing arms, benefiting from rack and pinion steering. It is equipped with 15-inch wheels, carpeted floors and trunk, offers bucket seats, and a very complete instrumentation. Braking is provided by front discs and rear drums.
